About: E.W. Scripps uses DART Enterprise 6.0 for traditional banner ad serving. Digital Envoy via Doubleclick provides geo-targeting data.
Options not supported
- Do not use JAVA applets (not to be confused with JavaScript) due to security issues, in addition to performance issues and initial load times.
- Ad codes that contains ILAYER, LAYER or NOLAYER tags will not be used due to cross-browser compatibility and stability issues.
- Mailto fields are not recommended because users may not have email readers configured properly.
- An ad may not prompt the download of a plug-in, and must be coded to search for any required plug-ins or display an alternate ad to those who don't have it.
HTML Specifications
- HTML code should not exceed 10k.
- 2 images max, total file size of images cannot exceed 20k
- Client-side image maps must be provided by the client.
- Form tags in HTML code must use “get” in the method.
- CGI scripts used in the HTML must be active at time of ad submission for testing.
General Flash
- Scripps accepts Flash 5 and higher
- Clicktag guidelines: view now
- If creative does not contain a clicktag variable per the above guidelines then Scripps cannot track clicks on the creative that is site server.

- 30k download and up to 4 additional streams (max 100k each) upon user click are permitted.
- Frame rate should not exceed 24 frames per second, but 12 is recommended
- If backup images are not provided, a 1x1 blank ad will serve to users who do not have appropriate versions of Flash.
- Use of Shared Objects is not permitted.
- Loading files from cross domains is not permitted for security reasons.
- Accessing user’s microphone or webcam is not permitted.
- Streaming video is allowed using FLV format and are treated as additional swf files, so no more than 4 at 100k each. Max 30 seconds of video.
- Recommended that Progressive video be downloaded when a user clicks the ad. Max 30 seconds of video.
- If containing audio, the ad is required to have a stop/mute and start button, must be user initiated, and may not exceed 30 seconds in length.

Expandable Ads
- All expandable ads must be user initiated and have a close button.
- If ad contains embedded video, video can auto start but the audio be user initiated.
- Mouse Over / Mouse Off: When the user passes a mouse over the creative, the ad expands; ad retracts when the mouse is removed.
- Click Open / Click Close: The creative can be set to expand with user click; the ad retracts when the mouse is removed or with a second user click.
- Sliding Billboards must be able to push the contents of the site down below itself when expanded.

Over the Page Ads (Page Peels,Floating Ads, Reverse Expandables)
- Eight second max play time for floating elements
- Recommended to be linked to an in-page banner and can fly in or out the banner.
- Must have a frequency cap of 1 per user per day.
- Floating ads may fly over other ads but may not pause over them.
- One second max pause time over any given content.
- Must have close button on the floating element
- Ads may disappear or land onto existing ad spots
- Audio must be user initiated
- Audio must end either simultaneously or before the ad finishes
- No preference to which side of page, floating ad originates
- Should not appear on home pages, chats, message boards, or registration fields – any areas where data is collected.
Interstitials/Transintionals Ads
- Must be full screen
- Recommended to have a frequency cap of 1 per user per day.
- Must have close button in upper right corner of creative
- Must time out automatically after 15sec max and close
- Ad creative in the full page can be 900x500 and have a full screen background
- Audio must be user initiated
- Embedded video must be streaming (if applicable)
